While vacationing on The Big Island of Hawaii, we spent a few nights at the Marriott Courtyard King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel.
The first thing I noticed was how friendly and helpful the staff were – I think this may be a good place to work, judging by the welcoming smiles of the employees.
Twice, I saw staff members pushing around guests who required a wheelchair. It was commendable that they had staff on hand to assist in this manner.
Disabled people were not forgotten at the pool. A portable pool lift ensures that disabled guests can enjoy a refreshing swim in the meticulously clean pool.
Initially, we had a regular room, but then switched to a handicapped room. Although I don’t use a wheelchair, there were two features of this room that made a big difference to me. A walk-in shower stall and a handicapped toilet. Whenever I travel, these are two things that I miss about home. (Since that was taken care of, it sure would have been great if we could have stayed longer! 🙂 )
I did feel some hesitation requesting this room, as I didn’t want to take it away from someone who was confined to a wheelchair. However, I would have surrendered it if someone had a need for it. The only draw-back is that these rooms tend to be noisier as they are close to the elevator – for good reason, though.
There is access to a protected beach in front of the hotel, which is what initially drew me to this property. I spent most of my time swimming near the pier, which is a short walk out the side door.
The lobby of the King Kamehameha hotel boasts a number of display cases full of artifacts and painting, providing a good introduction to some of Hawaii’s history.
I almost forgot to mention the very comfortable bed, made up with a gorgeous duvet that was easy to pull up. Pillows? Lots of them; of different thicknesses and a choice of foam and feather, all ready to be positioned just-so! Ahhh! Zzzzz.
