#424 – Fingernails

That tweet caught my attention.

I have vertical ridges in my nails, so I was hoping to learn more about this. Unfortunately, I didn’t.

I wonder if this is part of the disease process of rheumatoid arthritis?

I’m curious. Do you have rheumatoid arthritis, and have vertical ridges in your nails?

  1. How weird, I had false nails done the other week (in an attempt to cheer myself up!) The technician commented on the ridges on my nails but we assume it’s because I’ve had acrylics before. One to google?!!

  2. I have deep horizontal ridges…

  3. I have vertical ridges also. I have tried to find info on that but did not manage to

  4. I have vertical ridges on some of my nails, too. Hmmmm…..

  5. I have Koilonychia which are horizontal depressions. It’s commonly linked with
    ◦Iron deficiency anemia
    ◦Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
    ◦Raynaud’s disease
    ◦Diabetes mellitus
My rheumy looked at them and said that many nail problems are linked with chronic diseases but offered no explanation or worry about it.

    • Hi Andrew,

I know that nail ridges are an indicator for illness. I am always curious to note if there are similarities with others who have the same condition.

So far, on today’s post – 3 of us with vertical ridges, 2 with horizontal and one unknown.

  6. I have mostly vertical ridges on my nails, but one has a horizontal ridge as well. I’ve never asked about the vertical ridges because I’ve had them so long I don’t think about them. I did ask about the horizontal ridge and the doctor said that they were an indicator of trauma, usually physical, but sometimes a huge emotional trauma (death, divorce, moving, etc) can cause them as well.
