Giveaway to Live Better with RA

It’s been awhile since I’ve written a post here on ART (A Rheumful of Tips). Let’s just say that I’ve haven’t felt very “arty,” although during my hiatus, I have continued to add to my drafts. (You really don’t want to know how many drafts I’ve saved between ART and ASC – Auntie Stress Café.)

In order to mark my return to writing, I’ve decided to offer a giveaway. (I have some ideas for future giveaways, but I’d like to hear from you, dear readers. Is this something that interests you?)

The Giveaway

I believe that when you have a chronic condition, the best thing you can do is to be proactive. I have rheumatoid arthritis, but it does not have me! Chronic pain can take over your life – it happened to me, when I didn’t know any better in my 20s, 30s and 40s. Then, I would have said that rheumatoid arthritis had me!

But, there’s wisdom with age. I am doing so much better by adopting a number of different strategies to live well with RA. (Another topic for a blog post!)

I’ve put this giveaway together to encourage you to take a step, then another step, then another, in the direction you want to go. Remember, it’s a process, so it won’t happen over night. Please consider this part of your self-care strategy.

The lucky winner will receive:

  1. Your Life with Rheumatoid Arthritis – Volume 1 by Lene Andersen. See the interview here: A Virtual Visit and an E-Book Giveaway.
  2. Live Well with Chronic Pain by Liza H. Leal, M.D. See: Book Review and Giveaway: Live Well with Chronic Pain.

#512 – A Giveaway That Makes Scents

headacheThankfully, I don’t often get headaches, but when I do, I reach for Headache Relief Serum from Purify Skin Therapy. The fresh scent of this roll-on product smells good enough to eat, and because it contains organic essential oils of peppermint, lavender, sweet marjoram, tulsi and basil in an organic base of rosehip seed oil and jojoba oil, it probably would be safe to eat. But don’t eat it, save it for those headaches.

This roll-on easily fits into your pocket or purse. Just make sure you screw the lid on tightly. I didn’t, and ended up scenting the area in which I was seated at a recent Blue Frog Studios concert. Oops! I hate to waste a precious drop. Suffice to say, people wanted to know what smelled so good! For a while, if I had a headache or just wanted to feel a little more lively, all I had to do was open my purse and take a deep sniff.

My husband tried it with his sinus headaches and reported that it did what the name promised. That makes a pleasant change, since headache relief for him is sometimes fleeting.

I’m excited to share this wonderful giveaway from Holly at Purify Skin Therapy. She has kindly offered a 10 ml roll-on bottle of Headache Relief Serum to one lucky person, just in time for Christmas giving – either for a loved one, or for yourself.

#510 – Book Giveaway: Chronic Christmas

chronicchristmasChronic Christmas: Surviving the Holidays with a Chronic Illness by Lene Andersen is an advent calendar-style book that is brimming with common-sense and humour, and is also infused with personal stories (and family recipes), that make for enchanting reading.

On each day leading up to Christmas, Lene covers a topic that can not only help those who live with chronic illness survive this season of merry-making, but also thrive. She takes each day further by suggesting how family and friends can assist someone with a chronic illness. If you struggle with what to do to help your friend, family member, or neighbour, this section is for you.

Here is an example from December 4th in the chapter entitled Take a Walk:

Find out which kind of limitations your friend, neighbor, or family member has because of their chronic illness and adapt your walking to that. This could mean walking a shorter distance and/ or doing it slowly. You may also need to adjust the time of day that you walk. You may also need to adjust the time of day that you walk. For instance, if your friend is sensitive to heat, bright sunlight, or humidity, walking in the evening after the sun goes down is less likely to make their chronic illness flare (an increase in symptoms). Have a conversation about what you both would like to do and the aspects of your lives that affect how and when you walk.

If the buddy-system means you’ll start moving, walking, swimming, dancing and more, then I’m all for it. At the very least, you want to maintain your strength, flexibility and endurance when you have a chronic illness. It’s a bonus when you improve it.

Here is a suggestion from Lene that is music to the ears of someone who is going through a tough time, whether it be a chronic or acute illness, or a death of a loved one:

Your offer of help can do wonders. Not that elusive some day in the future that never really happens kind of help, but now. This month. Don’t say, ‘Can I help?’ Instead say, ‘I’m setting aside a day to help you before Christmas. When would you like me to come over, and what would you like me to do?’

People in those situations are often overwhelmed. They may feel like it’s too much to ask for all the help they need, so they quietly struggle to do the things that need doing. A definitive offer of help can be like a breath of refreshing winter air.

Bear in mind that it’s empowering to ask for help when you need it. Lene addresses this topic on December 20th. How? You’ll just have to read this book to find out!

Chronic Christmas is the little book that:

  • Gives you practical tips you can put to immediate use.
  • Can help you get through the holidays with a smile on your face.
  • Help you deepen your relationships.
  • Is for sharing and caring.

#490 – Know, Do and Feel Better + a Giveaway

I recently came across Aligned and Well, a website that sells books, DVDs and kits. Katy Bowman created Aligned and Well to help you make the most of the body you’re in with an exercise prescription that will help you restore alignment so that you can move in a more natural manner. When you are aware of some of the movement habits that you may have cultivated in response to your pain and deformity, you can make changes which will help you do and feel better. (Now known as Nutritious Movement.)

In Biomechanics for Strong Bones, Katy caught my attention at “Kyphosis” (at 2:21). Well, she actually had me at “rhomboids“; I think the simple head back exercise is a great one to begin doing.

(Incidentally, since there is absolutely no way I can lean on my wrists, as pictured, I’ve done an adapted version at my desk. Does that count, Katy? 🙂 )

When You Hurt All OverA further search reveals a whole series of DVDs, but the one that I’m excited to share with you is called “When You Hurt All Over”.

This is like having a physiotherapist and personal trainer in your living room. You may have heard some of the information elsewhere, but if you are in the midst of a chronic situation, some of that information may have become lost, thanks to those stress hormones that liberally flow during chronic periods.

I’ve had the opportunity to add some of the exercises from “When You Hurt All Over” to my routine; I know they will pay off in the long run.

Now, thanks to Katy, one lucky person will receive a copy of “When You Hurt All Over”.

* Please check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise program.

How to Enter and Rules:

1. To enter the giveaway, complete the following statement by leaving your answer in the comment section, below: When I feel better, I _________.

2. Entries must be received by midnight PST, on Sunday, November 24th, 2013.

3. How exciting! Thanks to Katy’s generosity, this contest is open to anyone, anywhere.
